How a gold jewellery price is built — making charges, wastage & GST explained

At the counter you're handed one number. Inside it are rupees that are effectively fixed and rupees that are pure shop policy—and therefore negotiable. Scroll to watch the bill come apart, layer by layer.

The problem

The shop shows you a total. It hides the split.

You ask the price of a bangle. The reply is a single figure — say ₹1,08,000. Whether that's fair depends entirely on numbers the shop didn't break out. Most online “gold calculators” make it worse: they fetch a live rate you can't check against the board in front of you, or they quietly fold making charges into the metal price.

How it comes apart

Rebuild the total from what you can see on the board.

Enter the gross weight, pick the hallmark purity, type the rate off the board, add the wastage and making the shop quoted, and the bill rebuilds itself line by line. Watch each layer stack up — and note the stamp on the right of every line.

A worked example: 10 g at 22K 916, a 24K board rate of ₹10,000/g, 8% wastage, ₹550/g making, composite 3% GST.

The honest number

It uses the stamp, not the fraction.

Under BIS standard IS 1417, hallmarked 22-carat gold is stamped 916 — a certified minimum of 91.6% purity. The tempting shortcut is 22 ÷ 24 = 91.667%. goldmath deliberately uses the stamped 916/1000, so the metal value is a slightly conservative, honest estimate rather than a rosy one. Every purity grade — 14K585 up to 24K995 — is cited to its source with the date it was verified.

Enforced, not promised

It can't leak what you're pricing — the browser blocks it.

A strict Content-Security-Policy sets connect-src 'none'. That means the page cannot make a network request even if it tried — no live rate is fetched, no analytics fire, nothing about your bangle ever leaves the device. There are no external fonts, scripts, or images either. Saved quotes live only in your browser's local storage.
