A private self-test, explained

How a private PHQ-9 & GAD-7 self-test works — scored on your device, never on a server

Search “PHQ-9 test online” and most results quietly log your answers to sell you telehealth. moodscale does the opposite: it reproduces the two questionnaires word for word, scores them in your browser, and shows only the published severity band. This page shows you exactly how — scroll to watch.

The real problem

You wanted a number. They wanted your data.

A typical “free online test”

  • Answers posted to a server as you tap
  • Email gate before your score
  • Ad & analytics trackers loaded
  • An interpretation it isn’t qualified to give

moodscale

  • Everything computed in your browser
  • No sign-up, no email, straight to the score
  • Zero trackers — the CSP forbids them
  • Only the published band label, cited — no advice

The exact questionnaire — nothing reworded

You answer the public-domain PHQ-9 or GAD-7 with the published wording and the four published response options. Every item is required — no answer is ever silently assumed to be zero.

Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by…

3. Trouble falling or staying asleep, or sleeping too much

Public-domain wording, reproduced verbatim — response values 0–3.

The score is pure addition — and it lands on the band

There is no model, no AI, no guesswork. The total is the sum of your item values. Watch nine answers add up, then the marker slide to where that total falls in the published cutoff ranges.

A PHQ-9 of 13 is shown as Moderate — the published label, cited to Kroenke, Spitzer & Williams (2001). moodscale adds no interpretation of its own.

If item 9 isn’t zero, help comes first — calmly

The PHQ-9’s ninth item asks about self-harm. Any answer of 1 or more surfaces a calm helpline panel above the score — unskippable until acknowledged — and a “Need help now?” link stays one tap away in the header and footer.

You don’t have to face this alone

A directory of verified numbers — not live help. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency services.

  • KIRAN1800-599-0019

  • Samaritans (UK/IE)116 123

Each number shows the date it was verified against an official source.

Every check-in is saved — only on your device

Each completed check-in is stored in your browser’s local storage with an ISO timestamp. A per-scale trend chart shades its background using the same published cutoffs as the scorer — one source of truth, no drift.

Raw scores over time, ready to print or export as CSV for your clinician. Trend lines carry measurement error — they are not a measure of treatment response.

The guarantee

Privacy the browser itself enforces

Most apps promise not to send your data. moodscale ships a security policy that makes sending it impossible — the browser blocks every outbound request before it leaves.

connect-src 'none'

No fetch. No XHR. No WebSocket. No analytics beacon. No CDN. No external font.

Consequence: history lives only in local storage. Clearing site data erases it — the CSV/PDF export is your only backup.
