voltmile compares the true cost of owning an electric vehicle versus a petrol one over the years you plan to keep it — using your purchase prices, electricity tariff, fuel price, mileage, maintenance and resale — and circles the exact break-even day. It ships no price data and never fetches any: results are exactly as good as the numbers you enter.
How the calculation works
For each option, total cost of ownership is
price + annual_km × years × cost_per_km + years × maintenance − resale.
EV running cost is Wh/km × tariff ÷ 1000 paise per km; petrol is
fuel_price × 10 ÷ (km/L × 10) paise per km. All money is held as integer
paise so nothing drifts by rounding.
A worked example
A scooter: EV ₹1,50,000 vs petrol ₹95,000, 8,000 km/year for
5 years, electricity ₹8/kWh at 35 Wh/km, petrol ₹105/L at 50 km/L,
maintenance ₹1,500 vs ₹3,500/year, resale ₹40,000 vs
₹35,000. voltmile computes EV running cost ₹0.28/km vs petrol
₹2.10/km, total cost ₹1,28,700 vs ₹1,61,500 — a lifetime
saving of ₹32,800, which is 20.31% of the petrol option's total
cost. The EV breaks even on day 1213 (about 30,220 km on a distance-only basis,
which excludes the maintenance saving and so differs from the day figure).
What it deliberately leaves out
No live prices, no loan/EMI interest, no fuel or tariff inflation, no battery-degradation curves, no subsidy tables, and no depreciation prediction — resale is an assumption you enter and label as one. This is arithmetic, not purchase advice; a rupee figure cannot weigh range anxiety or charging access.
